There are many dystopias about the future of AI. It’s still important to remember that we people make decisions on how to experiment and pilot AI initiatives. In most companies, decision-makers face questions and hesitation toward the new. As we know, change is never easy – and that's especially true for AI transformation. 01 –  Bring Clarity

In an organizational context, we need discussion and decisions on what we're focusing on. Once we narrow down a business case or a precise question, we can communicate clearly on the project’s goals. Who will participate? How will we proceed? What are we testing or experimenting with? Without clear communication, there will be noise, hesitation, and doubt that slows down the work. Do this in townhall meeting speech, internal messaging and team meetings. Multiple channels strengthen the message.

02 – Support Sensemaking

Once the AI development project has kicked off, remember to facilitate the journey. Organized working meetings support common sensemaking: we build situational awareness and shift our thinking when we face something new. Sensemaking is a continuous process involving arranging our thoughts, ideation, criticism, and reflection. We often find the most plausible path forward together. Therefore, it’s important to keep this process ongoing. Workshop or a working meeting suit best for building this dialogue.

03 – Facilitate Co-operation

As we know from any kind of organizational change, it never succeeds on its own, and AI is no exception. AI initiatives involve many different parts of the organization: innovations are owned by R&D, processes by business areas, and technologies by IT. Learning new skills is also needed and often supported by HR.

Facilitation of new ways of working is crucial when it comes to something as cross-functional as AI development. To ensure enactment and getting things done, bring the right people together. Plan the process and send invitations – and remember to communicate about the outcome.

Before AI revolutions are made, we people need to interact with each other. We are the ones working together, defining common goals, and then working towards them.

It starts with clarifying what we want to achieve. After that, we make sense together on what AI means for us, what it enables, and where its limitations lie.
